New Year's Eve · At home · 4–10 per room

New Year party games for the hours before the countdown.

New Year's Eve has a pacing problem. Everyone arrives at nine, midnight is three hours away, and the party either peaks too early or waits around for the countdown. These New Year party games are sorted by the part of the night they suit: one to start as people walk in, a few for the loud hour, and picks for a family night at home, a couples party and the office celebration.

Most run from a room code on everyone's own phone — free, in the browser, with nothing to install and nothing to set up.

As people arrive (start this first)

New Year's Eve is long, and the best game of the night is the one you set up at 9pm and pay off at 12:05.

01

The Prophecy

Everyone secretly picks a prediction about how the night will go — someone checks their phone ten times, someone orders food at 2am. Hold the reveal until after the countdown, then vote on which came true.

02

Andar Ki Baat

Answer a personal question with a number, then bet on where you rank in the group. Cooperative and gentle — a good one while people are still trickling in.

03

Bhed Chaal

Everyone answers the same question and scores by matching the majority. One-sentence rules, fine for latecomers to jump into.

The loud hour before midnight

01

Antakshari

Two teams, a letter chain, a 30-second timer and twist rounds like “sirf 90s”. The phone keeps score, so the arguments are about the singing.

02

Dumb Charades

The phone deals the Bollywood film to the actor only, and everyone types their guesses on their own phone. No chits, no peeking.

03

Mukhbir

One person is secretly sabotaging the party with missions only their phone knows about. Best for 5 to 10, and best when the room is already loud.

At home with family

When the parents are staying up for the countdown too.

01

Antakshari

The one game every generation already knows. Make it teams of parents vs kids and watch the 70s catalogue win.

02

Haan Ya Na

Yes/no questions answered on everyone's phone at once, then revealed together. Keep it on the Mild tier while the elders are playing.

03

Tambola

Still the family New Year classic. Play a round while the snacks go around, then move to the phones.

Couples, office and large groups

01

Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai

Two players act out a secret scene and everyone guesses how the characters are related. Great at a couples party — nobody has to play against their partner.

02

Bhed Chaal

For the office New Year party: on the Halka tier the questions are things like who drinks the most chai. Quick rounds, nothing too personal.

03

Large groups (15+)

Each Mehfil room fits 10. For a bigger party, open two rooms — say, one for Antakshari and one for Dumb Charades — and swap at 11.

How the phone thing works

01

The host opens mehfil.party and taps Room banao — no app, no sign-up.

02

The four-digit code goes in the party's WhatsApp group.

03

Everyone joins on their own phone. The phone runs the game; you handle the countdown.

FAQ

What games can we play at a New Year party at home?

Games that need nothing but phones work best at home: Antakshari with a phone scoreboard, Bollywood Dumb Charades, and The Prophecy, where everyone locks in a prediction early and the group votes after midnight on which came true.

What are good New Year party games for family?

Antakshari is the one every generation already knows — play parents vs kids. Haan Ya Na on the Mild tier and Tambola also work with elders in the room.

What New Year games work for a large group or office party?

Each Mehfil room holds up to 10 players, so split a large group into a few rooms. For an office party, pick quick games on their lighter tier, like Bhed Chaal on Halka, where the questions stay safe for colleagues.

Are these New Year party games free?

Yes. Mehfil runs free in the browser with no app download and no account needed to play.
